How PARAKH Report Card Is Revolutionizing Assessment and Evaluation Process for Students?

Evaluation and assessment of a student are key factors in the progress of a student. However, the system of tracking a student’s progress is quite outdated, as it emphasizes academic scores, discounting the merits of the overall potential of the student, solely focusing on the knowledge of subjects. This leads to learning issues in a student, where sometimes they develop a tendency for rote learning, which yields no fruitful outcome in their future.

To change this critical educational practice, NCERT announced the establishment of PARAKH- an independent organization that sets uniform standards for evaluation and assessment to be implemented in schools across India.

Full Form of PARAKH

Launched on February 8, 2023, PARAKH is India’s first national assessment regulator as a part of National Education Policy (NEP)- 2020. PARAKH stands for – Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development. The main aim of PARAKH is to bring together all the educational boards and schools on a unified platform and therefore set a benchmark of education for the holistic progress of all Indian students.

In a response to mitigate the obsolete way of assessing student’s progress through academic scores and shift the approach from ‘teacher-centric’ to ‘students centric’, PARAKH has announced the Holistic Progress Card (HPC), under the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF SC). As the name suggests, it is a comprehensive report of the 360-degree progress and uniqueness of a student in cognitive, affective, socio-emotional, and physical abilities. With the central idea of engaging the student in their educational journey, HPC promotes:

  • Recognition of the unique strength of each student.
  • Development of critical thinking skills
  • Problem-Solving Skills
  • Identification of the scope of improvement
  • Individual growth with a collaborative effort
  • Child development
  • Engagement of parents in child’s learning journey
  • Inclusivity by incorporating different learning styles
  • Removal of prejudice and empower fairness in assessment

Structure of Holistic Progress Card

To implement the objectives of holistic progress of students as per NCF SC recommendations, this report is categorized into 3 stages:

  • Foundational Stage: Emphasis on toy-based pedagogy, foundational literacy and numeracy skills, and development of basic social skills. Implemented in classes 1 and 2.
  • Preparatory Stage: More structured tools and methods of learning are introduced. Focuses on the development of critical thinking and grasping skills. Implemented in classes 3-5.
  • Middle Stage: Deeper focus on subject-oriented learning, emphasis on complex problem-solving skills, and nourishment of advanced cognitive abilities. Implemented in classes 6-8.
